Mary studied for an undergraduate degree in Music at the University of York, graduating in 2012. She is currently in the final stages of her PhD, also at the University of York (due to complete in Spring 2018).
Born and raised on a farm in the Yorkshire Dales, Mary is passionate about her home county and promoting quality music-making within it. She started having piano lessons aged five, the flute aged seven and the double bass when she was ten. She has always sung, but began formal singing lessons as a teenager.
Mary holds Grade 8 qualifications in singing and piano and has been lucky to learn from teachers whose particular emphasis has been on technique. She believes that all good performances come from a grounding in solid and healthy technique and her lessons concentrate particularly on technique and communication.
Mary’s interests are wide ranging: Music plays a large part in her life and she enjoys singing in choirs and playing in orchestras alongside solo engagements. She has a particular passion for opera and sees as many of Opera North‘s productions as possible. Outside of music Mary enjoys cooking (particularly baking), running, walking in the Dales or the Lakes, French film and is currently trying to improve her knitting.
